Electric cars and energy storage systems are the primary applications for LiFePO4 prismatic cells. Small gadgets like cell phones and electric bicycles are not appropriate for them. They are therefore more suited for applications that require a lot of energy.

Compared to LFPs, Li-ion batteries have a higher power density per unit weight or volume. For instance, a typical Li-ion battery has an energy density of 45–120 Wh per lb (100–265 Wh per kilogram), whereas a LiFePO4 battery has an energy density of 40–55 Wh per lb (90–120 Wh per kg).

The flattened prismatic cell, on the other hand, is more durable and has a higher energy content. Compared to cylindrical cells, these cells are less common but offer several important advantages. Certain prismatic cells have exterior casings made of plastic. Different types of plastic are used; the less expensive cells employ lightweight plastics with the least expensive composition. Prisma cells come in two varieties: either the anode, separator, and cathode electrode sheets are stacked inside the case, or they are rolled and flattened.
